BÜRGLKOPF

AT 2025 - 78' - OVD - Director: Lisa Polster

At an altitude of 1,300 meters, seemingly removed from time and space, the Bürglkopf return center is located on a Tyrolean mountain. Here, people are encouraged to leave the country during their asylum procedure through return counseling, but also through the pressure of isolation. [...]
For some a place of uncertainty, for others a vacation paradise: The Kitzbühel Alps, a center of Austrian winter sports, rise just a few kilometers from the Bürglkopf. State-of-the-art cable cars transport ski tourists to the summits, where they whizz carefree towards the valley, past the asylum seekers. [...]

Lisa Polster courageously and emphatically documents the dehumanizing, undignified conditions in the return center, where waiting becomes part of everyday life and hope becomes a scarce resource. When she calls for permission to film, she receives a dismissive answer right at the beginning: they don't know why she should be granted access. However, it would be possible to pan across the house for the video. With a view of the Bürglkopf, Polster reveals the practice of Austria's isolationist policy - which the authorities would prefer to keep hidden behind the shadows of the summits.
