CALLE MÁLAGA – EIN ZUHAUSE IN TANGER (SOMMERKINO IN DER DÖLITZER WASSERMÜHLE)
In the organizer's words:
FRA/ESP/GER/BEL/MAR 2025, Feature Film, 116 min
Director: Maryam Touzani · Original version with German subtitles (Spanish, Arabic)
Starring: Carmen Maura, Marta Etura, Ahmed Boulane, María Alfonsa Rosso
María Ángeles is deeply rooted in the Spanish quarter of Tangier. Her apartment on Calle Málaga—full of memories, flowers, and antique treasures—is her pride and joy. She’s constantly chatting with the neighborhood residents or watching the city’s colorful hustle and bustle from her balcony. When her daughter Clara wants to sell the apartment, everything is thrown into disarray. But instead of moving into a retirement home, María Ángeles puts up a fight. With wit, cunning, and heart, she fights to keep her home. And in the process, she discovers an even greater zest for life. A story that under a different director might quickly slip into shallowness becomes, in Maryam Touzani’s hands, an atmospheric and sensitive portrait of a woman who knows how to preserve life’s beautiful moments on her own terms. In addition to a keen sense of the characters and their longings, the film is distinguished by Touzani’s signature focus on delicious food, beautiful flowers, and invigorating community—elements that add color not only to María Ángeles’s life. A wonderful role for lead actress Carmen Maura, who has become an icon of Spanish cinema since the first Almodóvar films in the 1980s.
