Among critics, the Amsterdam orchestra has been considered one of the best international orchestras for many years. The young Finn Klaus Mäkelä, the future chief conductor of the orchestra, was also at the podium.
The young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's view of Fingal's Cave on the Hebridean island of Staffa, for example, was dramatic: the enormous basalt columns surrounded by waves inspired him to write his "Hebrides" Overture. While the famous "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the concert aria "Infelice," and "Hero and Leander" by his sister Fanny were based on literary models by famous playwrights such as Shakespeare. Beethoven, on the other hand, reacted to the dramatic political circumstances of his time in his "Eroica" - and set a sounding monument to the enlightened and free man with his 3rd Symphony.
