Rio de Janeiro, early 1970s: Brazil is under military dictatorship. The Paiva family lives in a house on the beach: father Rubens, mother Eunice and their five children.
Harmony and openness prevail - until one day armed government officials pick up Rubens Paiva, a former member of parliament for the Workers' Party. As a witness, as they say. In fact, he will never return, as one of the "desaparecidos": thousands of citizens were arrested, tortured, murdered, without a trace. His wife Eunice tries to find out what happened to Rubens...
Walter Salles' new film looks directly into one of Brazil's darkest times with the harrowing story of a family in uncertainty about the fate of the father, and is at the same time an encouraging portrait of a woman who refuses to be defeated. The film is based on the autobiographical novel by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, son of the family, and has won numerous awards - including the Oscar for Best International Film in March.

Brazilian director Walter Salles received the Golden Berlinale Bear for CENTRAL STATION (1998) and an Oscar for FOREVER HERE. His other films such as THE JOURNEY OF YOUNG CHE and ON THE ROAD have also received numerous awards.
