In the summer of 1980, Barbara Wolff, a doctor, has applied to leave the GDR. And is transferred from the Charité to a small hospital in the deepest provinces. Jörg, her lover in the West, is working on preparations for her escape; the Baltic Sea is one possibility. And Barbara is waiting. New apartment, new neighbors, the summer and the country - she will leave all that behind. But her new boss André Reiser confuses her: his smile, his care, his trust in her. And his inscrutability: is he in love with Barbara? Or is he being set up by the Stasi?
With a great Nina Hoss in the leading role, Christian Petzold delves deep into work, everyday life and relationships under the rule of mistrust: "A flawless film - as a film about the GDR, it is so great because Petzold actually makes the behavior of an individual towards the state a very individual question."
