Hellerau, a place of modernism in Saxony, is described as a social utopia and a Gesamtkunstwerk - a place where the interaction of the arts played an important role in everyday life. The ideal of building was inspired by craftsmanship. The model of a communal life based on humane, healthy living and working conditions, social balance and a culture that was there for everyone emerged here. A new design and architecture, a reform of arts education, cultural participation and avant-garde stage art developed here, to which the composer and music teacher Émile Jaques-Dalcroze made a significant contribution with his rhythmic gymnastics.

Since 2018, the renowned filmmakers Gerburg Fuchs and Niels Bolbrinker have been following life in Hellerau in the areas of art/culture and work/life. They researched historical sources, conducted interviews, traced the "spirit" of Hellerau and produced extensive film material. For the first time, the resulting documentary film "Rhythmic Spaces" provides an overall view of Hellerau's past and present.
