"Music is like water," says Ghanaian musician Ata Kak. "As soon as it flows out, it can go anywhere." And as if to prove it, Ata Kak's own story also bears witness to his unshakeable belief in the power of music. In the early 1990s, the artist, who was born in Kumasi, Ghana, and lived in exile for a time, created the cult classic Obaa Sima, on which he transformed lo-fi beats, high-pitched rap, elements of disco, highlife and dub into a do-it-yourself masterpiece with an Afrofuturist flair. The album, originally released on cassette, was quickly forgotten until New York music nerd Brian Shimkowitz discovered it at a street market in Ghana in 2002 - the starting signal for his now world-famous blog Awesome Tapes From Africa. After years of searching, Shimkowitz finally managed to track down Ata Kak in Ghana and reissue his tape in 2015. What followed was a worldwide hype around a timeless and innovative piece of music history that finally gave Ata Kak an international music career at well over 50. Ata Kak is now finally coming to Bremen with his irrepressible energy - and will unleash a feel-good groove tornado in a class of its own on Goetheplatz.
