There’s that moment when your mom speaks to you in German in front of guests so everyone can see she can do it—and you’re dying inside.

That’s exactly the kind of moment we’re talking about.

Culture Clash Comedy is a new open mic in Cologne-Ehrenfeld for stand-up by people who grew up somewhere in between. Between two countries, two languages, two ideas of what to do with your life. On stage are the second generation, the first generation, and those who don’t fit into either category: people with two passports, people who’ve come out, people who’ve done both.

No cringe, no jokes about mothers-in-law, no “foreigners are just people too” clichés. Instead, keenly observed material from people who’ve experienced it all firsthand—and who can now laugh about it. Most of the time.

The Motoki Collective has 60 members. That means: You can see who’s laughing next to you, and the people on stage can see you. There’s no back row to hide in. If that’s not your thing, you’re in the wrong place.

About 90 minutes, one intermission, and afterward, whoever wants to stay can stay.

Vol. 1 is the beginning. Be there before you have to claim you were there from the very start.
