Contemporary meets Jazz Dance

In the organizer's words:

In this workshop, precise, iconic elements of Bob Fosse jazz - clear lines, distinctive hands, rhythmic isolations - meet contemporary techniques such as fall-and-release. This combination creates a lively mixture of fixed choreographic sequences and improvisational moments.

The participants develop a short choreography step by step and have space to explore their own movement quality and expressiveness. The focus is not on perfect technical execution, but on joint discovery, creation and playful experimentation with both styles. The workshop is aimed at adults with and without dance or movement experience.

As part of the DSHS Dance MA program, the workshop takes place in cooperation with TanzFaktur.

About Corinne & Shiyuan:

Corinne May works as a dancer, dance teacher, choreographer and completed dance training with a focus on ballet, jazz dance and modern dance at the Conservatoire du Nord in Luxembourg. She is currently studying part-time for an M.A. in Dance Education, Research and Artistic Practice at the German Sport University Cologne.

In addition to her artistic training, she holds a Master's degree in Sociology from the Université de Liège. Corinne is active in both socio-educational and dance-artistic projects.

Her artistic work is characterized by physical precision and emotional directness and works with elements of modern dance, dance theater, ballet, jazz, voguing and martial arts.

For Corinne, it is interesting to see the body as a place where the personal and the social meet. This includes topics such as greed, power, identity, body sociology and medical sociology.

An internship with Angie Hiesl will take place in 2024. In 2025, Corinne showed an excerpt of her own solo piece "Das stille Kämmerlein" at the Fünfzehnminuten Festival Cologne. In the same year, the piece "A table!" was created with the close production support of Roots & Routes Cologne.

Shiyuan Sun works as a freelance dancer and dance teacher. She is studying for an M.A. in Dance Education, Research and Artistic Practice at the German Sport University Cologne. Prior to this, she gained experience in competitive dance, particularly in standard and Latin dances, and completed an in-depth training at the Contemporary Dance School Hamburg, specializing in contemporary dance and ballet.

She is active in both artistic and educational contexts and has been involved in various stage and dance projects, including "TRAMAS" (Kampnagel & Elbphilharmonie Hamburg), "RE:SET" (Sprechwerk Hamburg) and her own choreographies such as "Somewhere in Between", etc. In her work, she combines technical precision with artistic reflection and teaches in projects and clubs.

She is particularly interested in the interplay of body, space and emotion - she sees dance as an exploratory and mediating practice that opens up new perspectives through movement.
