Christmas time at the Bavarian National Museum is crib time. This year, however, the main role is not played by traditional nativity scenes. Instead, we are highlighting our spectacular collection of modern, famously colorful, sometimes huge, sometimes tiny artist nativity scenes from the 20th and 21st centuries.
Comic meets cubism, pop art meets surrealism. Unusual perspectives and entertaining designs present the theme of the nativity scene in a contemporary light, while at the same time offering a visual treat. The artists, including Munich academy professor Anton Hiller, sculptor Peter Sauerer, performance artist Rupert Stöckl and graphic artist Walter Tafelmaier, are concerned with the content of the Christian Christmas story, despite all the alienation, visual challenge and sometimes impertinence.
