Critical Public Viewing

In the organizer's words:

Can we watch the World Cup with a clear conscience? Let’s ask ourselves this question together—as part of a critical public viewing event.

The World Cup is supposed to stand for solidarity, unity, and peace in the name of sports. But neither FIFA, the organizing body, nor the host countries have represented these values for a long time. The only value that still matters is material gain—at the expense of those who already have nothing left.

Corruption, poverty, deportations, racism, sexism, and the greed of the super-rich give the World Cup a very bitter aftertaste.

So how can a soccer fan watch both the games and the terrible conditions in the host countries with a clear conscience?

By staying informed, critically examining the issues, putting the situation into context, and above all, by helping those who stand to lose the most from the World Cup and FIFA.

NeckarOrte Heidelberg and the Heidelberg University Chapter of Amnesty International invite you to a “critical public viewing.” We want to highlight the abuses and human rights violations surrounding the World Cup, inform you, and encourage you to get involved: How do you assess these conditions? How do you feel about them? Should a global soccer celebration come at such a high humanitarian cost?

We’ll donate a portion of our proceeds and set up donation boxes. All donations will go to Amnesty International.

All of Germany’s matches will be broadcast on TV and on a big screen; starting June 25, the hsg Amnesty International group will have an information booth and interactive activities. The fundraising campaign begins on June 20.
