Tragicomedy based on Edmond Rostand - Updated by Martin Crimp - German version by Ulrich Blumenbach and Nils Tabert
The play opening in the theater tent is a true ode to language and lively wordplay. British playwright Martin Crimp catapults Edmond Rostand's verse play into the 21st century with his brilliantly humorous and poetic adaptation.
Cyrano is a daredevil whose fencing skills are feared. But sharper than his sword is his eloquence, with which he transforms words into quick-witted wit or tender poetry. He loves the beautiful, clever Roxane, but doesn't think he stands much of a chance with her, as he is plagued by a handicap: his oversized nose. When Roxane falls in love with the handsome but linguistically untalented cadet Christian, Cyrano rushes to his aid and writes Roxane the most beautiful love letters. He also prompts Christian when, as so often, he is at a loss for words with Roxane. Little by little, the three of them get lost in a labyrinth of love, deception, misjudgment and suffering. When Cyrano and Christian are finally sent off to war, Cyrano makes a promise to Roxane: to make sure that the man he loves is not harmed. But war is dirty and hard, it destroys poetry and leads the world into prose - and unfortunately this is always and everywhere, at all times, in the theater and in reality.
Martin Crimp's new version of the 19th century verse novel was celebrated by the press as a liberating blow: "It dusts off Rostand's verse drama and shows what it means to be alive. You simply have to fall in love with this rousing evening." (Daily Telegraph)
