Daniel Marwecki & Jana Puglierin: Deutschland, Europa und die Werte des Westens
In the organizer's words:
So what now? What’s next—in Germany and in Europe—when “the West” as a community of values is so clearly being called into question? After all, a key part of the system is currently falling apart: the prohibition of violence, the separation of powers, equal rights for all—do these principles still apply in the U.S.? Setting that aside: How do we address the Global South’s complaint that “the West” has always defended its values by applying very double standards? Question after question, to which political science offers varying answers. Daniel Marwecki, at the University of Hong Kong, offers an international perspective; in his book *The World After the West*, he argues for accepting a multipolar world order and politically coming to terms with the loss of hegemony. Jana Puglierin is the director of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations; in her book *Who Defends Europe? *, she calls for greater military efforts so that we can at least preserve and defend Western values for ourselves. And who is “we”? asks Salon host Jens Meyer-Kovac.
