It only happens once "You don't know me, but you've heard a lot about me," Werner Richard Heymann used to say. In fact, the German-Jewish composer, who died over 60 years ago, is hardly known anymore - in stark contrast to his songs such as "Ein Freund, ein guter Freund" or "Irgendwo auf der Welt".
With brilliant arrangements and humorous anecdotes, the young ensemble of singer Fernanda von Sachsen and pianist Marina Schlagintweit with Maximilian Hirning on bass and Tilman Albrecht on drums recalls the eventful life of Heymann, who helped shape the flourishing cabaret scene in the vibrant Berlin of the 1920s and founded the genre of the sound film operetta as general music director of the UFA. As a Jewish emigrant after 1933, he also made a career in Hollywood as a film composer with four Oscar nominations. Heymann's songs, which once filled the golden screens, now find their way back onto the stage through the innovative duo accompanied by a grooving bass and lively drums - and in a completely new light.
With their charming and virtuoso modern interpretations, Fernanda von Sachsen and Marina Schlagintweit transport us into a world in which the past meets the present and shows just how timeless Heymann's music is.
