Sophie, a young woman, works as a milliner in her late father’s shop. During one of her rare visits to the city, she happens to meet the attractive and charismatic magician Hauro. She finally finds him and from then on works as a cleaning lady in his mysterious walking castle—a gigantic mechanical behemoth that moves on insect-like legs, whistles from every orifice, and can open its doors to four different worlds and times. Calcifer, the fire demon who guards the house, and Hauro’s childlike assistant Markl soon become her friends—only the self-absorbed Hauro barely pays her any attention and enjoys life in his carefree way. However, when he is summoned by the king to save his country from the looming war, he finally takes on responsibility. But that alone isn’t enough: only Sophie’s growing love for him can ultimately break the curse, save them both, and protect the world from destruction...
