Photographer Alea Horst says about herself: "In 2015, I was a wedding photographer who had no excuse for not helping people drowning in the Mediterranean. Back then, I set out as a naive emergency aid worker to help and didn't expect what I saw, smelled and experienced. I couldn't go back to my old life after pulling people out of the water for the first time in my life and working many nights in the Moria camp on Lesbos. Since then, I have supported over 30 international aid projects, mainly as a photographer, but often also as an emergency aid worker."
Her touching pictures are emotional, colorful and aesthetic. They give us an insight into poverty, war and displacement and at the same time show joie de vivre, hope and psychological and physical resilience. Between poverty, destruction, flight, displacement, plastic waste, colonialism, child labor and climate change, the focus is on people and their dignity.
This year, she is presenting photographs from her last trip to Afghanistan after the Taliban took power in 2021 at motoki. With her pictures, the artist shows a very personal perspective and at the same time provides an insight into current everyday life in Afghanistan.
The exhibition is accompanied by various events on the subject of flight and Alea Horst herself will be a guest at motoki on the last day of the exhibition, 12.12.2023, to talk about her impressions.
The exhibition can always be viewed on Mondays from 18:30 to 21:30 and of course during the events. Here are the dates in detail:
