During a revolution, the fleeing governor's wife leaves her baby behind. Her maid Grusche finds the child and rescues it. At the end of her arduous escape, she is brought before a court because the governor's wife wants her child back. Times have changed, now the child is the heir to a great fortune. But just before the old regime regains a firm grip on the reins, Judge Azdak reinvents Solomon's chalk circle in case the biological mother reclaims her child. It is no coincidence that Bertolt Brecht was the first to stage "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" at the Berliner Ensemble in 1954. The question addressed here is as simple as it is politically urgent: Who owns the world?
