So ends Hans Castorp's journey in Thomas Mann's masterpiece THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN. It remains uncertain whether he will die or survive the horrors of the First World War. Whether he will see the daring Madame Chauchat again or think once more of his childhood sweetheart Hippe. And whether he will ever return to the fascinating sanatorium where he lived for seven years - and in whose eternal presence everything seemed more intense to Hans: love, death, freedom and life.

Director Charlotte Sprenger stages a new perspective on the classic, for she does not let Hans go into the unknown alone. She sends him into an existential death dream full of memories, fears and longings. And it examines one of the biggest questions that has been troubling the readers of ZAUBERBERG for decades: Does Hans Castorp let himself be seduced by death or does the desire for life triumph?
