THE 39 STEPS

Richard Hannay has just moved into his new London apartment. To escape the chaos of moving for a brief moment, he decides to finally go to the theater again. A decision that will have far-reaching consequences. During the performance, shots ring out in the auditorium, and a mysterious woman asks him for protection. Back at his apartment, the woman reveals herself to be a spy and tells Hannay about a dangerous operation called The 39 Steps. But before he can pry any further information out of her, the stranger falls into his arms—not out of erotic desire, but because she has been murdered. Hannay quickly realizes that the situation must appear as though he were the culprit. He decides to flee—and to unravel the mystery of The 39 Steps. Quite against his will, Richard Hannay, the man with the attractive mustache, becomes the most wanted man in the United Kingdom.

Patrick Barlow has conjured up a zany stage adaptation for four actors based on Alfred Hitchcock’s hit film of the same name; playing multiple roles, they invite the audience to a crime thriller filled with comedic adventures, subtle irony, and fast-paced theatrical action.

The play *The 39 Steps* won the 2007 Olivier Award for “Best New Comedy” and is a long-running hit in both London’s West End and on New York’s Broadway.
