In order to take revenge on his friend, Gabriel von Eisenstein, Dr. Falke sets a trap for him by inviting him to a party at the villa of Prince Orlovsky. Dr. Falke arranges for Eisentsein's jealous wife Rosalinde (who herself is struggling with fidelity), their student girl Adele and the prison guard Frank to appear there, also in costume and under feigned identities. The result is a game of confusion with humor and great emotions, while in the end "only the champagne was to blame for everything"...
