How did an Egyptian queen become a global icon?

Her discovery in Tell el-Amarna in Egypt was a sensation, and her presentation in Berlin in 1924 caused a sensation far beyond Germany. Today, her silhouette alone is enough for everyone to know who she is and what she stands for. But what is the reason that the world-famous bust of Nefertiti is now seen in very different places as a prime example of female beauty? And how is it that Nefertiti's magic has survived more than three millennia unscathed?

Historian Sebastian Conrad takes us on a journey to ancient Egypt and the world of the pharaohs; he describes the dubious circumstances under which the bust came to Berlin in the age of colonialism and how it has been fought over ever since. His wide-ranging historical narrative takes us not only to Berlin and Cairo, but also to China, India and Brazil, and we learn why artists such as Beyoncé and Rihanna are now staging themselves as Nefertiti's revenants.

SEBASTIAN CONRAD is Professor of Modern History at the Free University of Berlin. His research focuses on the history of colonialism and post-colonialism as well as the history of East Asia and historical thought. He has taught in New York and Paris, Florence and Tokyo and is today one of the most internationally renowned representatives of global history as well as the author of numerous books, including German Colonial History and Global History.
