Balkis, the Queen of Sheba, visits her future husband in Jerusalem and falls in love with the master builder Adoniram. She leaves the unloved ruler for his sake, but her lover falls victim to a bloody intrigue. Charles Gounod has captured the story of the fabulously beautiful queen in the spider's web of power in a musically intoxicating grand opéra.
