“Madness, madness everywhere”—a masterpiece
The young knight Walther von Stolzing loves Eva, who is allowed to marry only the winner of a Meistersinger competition. Against all odds and Beckmesser’s meddling, Walther ultimately wins the competition with the help of Hans Sachs. However, he renounces the title and leaves the field together with Eva. Director Daniel Kramer stages Wagner’s opera as a portrait of a society whose social order is ideologically charged and dangerous: here, rules become weapons, tradition leads to exclusion, and community results in isolation.
