"Shame must change sides", as Gisèle Pelicot demanded during the trial against her ex-husband. Her husband had drugged her for years, raped her and offered her to strangers for sexual abuse. Unfortunately, this is not a particularly disturbing isolated case, because sexual and domestic violence against women is not an exception. Violence against women is systematic. It happens almost every hour in Saxony.
These are attacks on the fundamental values of our society. And despite numerous measures, there has been shockingly little change in the extent of violence against women in recent years. This begs the question: What do we need to do in Saxony to expand protection against domestic and sexualized violence? What is needed to ensure that victims receive better support and perpetrators are punished consistently? How and when will shame finally change sides?
We would like to discuss these questions with representatives from the fields of practice, science and politics and take a closer look at the situation in Saxony and Leipzig.
