DOK Leipzig Sommerkino
In the organizer's words:
Perfect for balmy summer nights: Our DOK Leipzig Summer Cinema is back for another season. This year, we’re once again contributing festival favorites from 2025 to Leipzig’s open-air cinema season—all featuring empowered female protagonists who champion freedom and self-determination. You can look forward to moving, powerful portraits of three women who tenaciously challenge rigid notions and shape their own stories.
“Cutting Through Rocks”: July 8 and July 30
The Oscar-nominated documentary, which won the Audience Award at DOK Leipzig 2025, will even be shown at two summer movie theaters: at the 7cl Summer Cinema hosted by the Cinémathèque Leipzig (at HP7) and at the Plagwitz Market Hall, as part of the Schaubühne Lindenfels Summer Cinema. “Cutting Through Rocks”tells the story of Sara, an Iranian woman who advocates for the women and girls in her community in a rural region of the country.
“Niñxs”: July 16
During CSD Week, the Luru Kino will screen the youth film“Niñxs,” in which Karla, a trans teenager, searches for the right way to share her story of growing up and her transition.
“The Woman Who Poked the Leopard”: August 27
The grand finale of the DOK Leipzig Summer Cinema is“The Woman Who Poked the Leopard,” which features extended subtitles (SDH) for deaf audiences—once again as part of the Schaubühne Lindenfels Summer Cinema. The film follows a feminist and activist from Uganda who stands up to the country’s current head of state.
