Germany immediately after reunification; the second major wave of layoffs hits the East: Women from the former large industrial enterprises of the GDR speak—with a matter-of-factness that seems surprising today—about themselves and the personal independence they gained through their work.

Self-assured and emancipated, they express their astonishment that suddenly only men are expected to do their jobs. They also talk about the utopian ideals of the past that no longer exist today.

These interviews were salvaged from the archives of the former Leipzig pirate radio station KANAL X, recorded on old U-matic tapes.

Along with footage of everyday work life in long-demolished industrial buildings and lignite mines, the film portrays women who have retained their pride and determination to this day. What was once gained? What has been lost?
