Dürers Nashorn

Albrecht Dürer never in his life saw a "Rhinocerus"—as he himself
called his woodcut, and yet with his
depiction of an armored rhinoceros, he created a work of art of world renown.
The Norwegian composer Trygve Madsen used Dürer’s work as a source
of inspiration for a humorous, fantastical, and innovative composition
for the French horn, which combines classical-tonal forms with modern elements
. He is called the Flemish Brahms: Lodewijk Mortelmans (1868–1952),
Lodewijk Mortelmans (1868–1952) is considered one of the great unknown
composers of the Romantic era. His particularly beautiful
"Lyrical Pastorale" for French horn and piano, which is worth rediscovering
. Richard Strauss, another master of the Romantic era, is also on
on the program. And Strauss was truly well-versed in the French horn.
His father, in fact, was a virtuoso on that instrument. Thus,
the son composed the Concerto in E-flat Major specifically for his father.
