Ein Kuchen für den Präsidenten

Iraq in the 1990s. While dictator Saddam Hussein has his birthday celebrated nationwide despite hardship and scarcity, nine-year-old Lamia draws a dreaded assignment at her school: She must bake the cake for the local festivities. It’s an almost impossible task, because food is scarce throughout the country—especially eggs, sugar, and flour. But she has to pull it off; otherwise, her family faces severe punishment.

With only two days to spare, the support of her classmate Saeed, and accompanied by her rooster Hindi, she sets out to find the ingredients in the next town. It’s an adventurous quest through a world full of uncertainty and deprivation, but also of small miracles, in which Lamia repeatedly experiences moments of humor, friendship, and hope.
