A small pub in a small Irish village called Leenane. There hasn't been much going on here for years, the tourists have stopped coming, and to make everyday life bearable, the inhabitants of the village meet in this pub almost every day. However, the two village originals Jack McDoyle and Shane McCardigan have set their minds on making Leenane something again. And so it fits in well with their plans that the Irish Tourist Board is currently looking for the most Irish of all Irish villages to advertise prominently in its new catalog.

Jack and Shane are clear: this is the chance for Leenane. All they have to do is make the village more attractive than before - but what do they need? An original Irish poet? A bully in the pub? An attractive harbour master? A local history museum? A singing pub landlord?

Each of the inhabitants is also in search of their own happiness: the pub landlord Tubby Tubson, who absolutely cannot sing; the young Charly McGuire, who has no idea what he is actually in the world for; his sister Iris, a teacher whose everyday life is not exactly glittering with variety; the poet John Bowler, who has not yet published anything; the painter Roxy Donegal, who has been secretly in love for a long time; the Dutch harbour master Mia de Jong, who quickly sets her mind on marrying someone; and the perpetually bad-tempered Richard Spencer, who spends his life at the bar. They all have an everyday life they want to escape ...
