Europe puts up the walls - in the midst of a humanitarian catastrophe. Max Ahrens and Maik Lüdemann accompany a sea rescue mission in the Mediterranean, show the catastrophic conditions in refugee camps and give a voice to people who have survived the life-threatening journey to Europe. And they look at the political and social developments in Germany with growing right-wing populism and a discourse that criminalizes flight and migration, brushes aside humanitarian aid and sees people as a mass of deportees.
Germany repeatedly sets the pace, Europe follows suit: The film questions the current narratives and sheds light on the mechanisms through which fear and populism determine the political agenda.
