1881 in New Mexico: Pat Garrett is appointed sheriff and given the task of "cleaning up" the area. This includes the arrest of Billy the Kid, for whom Garrett was a fatherly friend. But now they are on opposite sides of the law.
The film is an elegiac late western about Garrett's duty as a lawman and his loyalty to Billy the Kid. As is typical of his unusual and violent westerns, Sam Peckinpah addresses the conflict between old friendship and the demands of the law.
Bob Dylan plays a supporting role as Billy the Kid's companion: the worldwide hit "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" was composed by Dylan for PAT GARRETT HUNTS BILLY THE KID.
