Empowerment as an educational task: practical knowledge in dealing with experiences of racism among children and young people
Children who are potentially affected by racism are confronted with prejudice and racism in their everyday lives, which they have to deal with on a daily basis.
Feeling accepted and socially accepted is a basic need for people of all ages. We know from research that being made the "other", experiencing prejudice about supposedly inferior abilities, racist abuse, exclusion and discrimination because of a characteristic are psychological injuries and by no means "trifles".
Content of the workshop:
- Understanding how racial prejudice affects children's self-esteem.
- Understanding how important it is to take these experiences seriously and not to tolerate them in one's own behavior and in the behavior of those around them.
- Equip children on different levels so that they know strategies and counter-designs, experience protected spaces and, depending on their age, learn to deal with what they have experienced in a differentiated way.
The workshop is only aimed at parents of children who experience racism. The workshop is intended as a space for exchange. A respectful consideration of different positions is assumed.
