Whether Michael Mayo is performing with his band, as a guest, or alone with a looper pedal, the LA-born singer's commanding and extraordinary voice is quickly catching on with critics and audiences around the world.
Mayo was born the son of two successful musicians and grew up only about 20 yards away from Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Earth Wind and Fire and Stevie Wonder. This proximity helped set Mayo on a musical path that revolved around elements of R&B, soul and jazz, shaping his musical identity long before he stepped on a stage.
Mayo attended the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and was only the third singer to be accepted into the 20-year-old program, where he learned from such greats as Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock.
Mayo, who now lives in Brooklyn and is still in his 20s, is a seasoned international performer who has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, Renée Fleming's American Voices Festival and the Panama Jazz Festival, among others. He has performed with Herbie Hancock, Jacob Collier, Kneebody, Gretchen Parlato, Josh Groban, Ben Wendel and Becca Stevens, to name a few. With his own band, he has played at the 2019 Playboy Jazz Festival, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, and the Monterey Jazz Festival.
