Intermission

Ravel Trio in A minor

It is with good reason that the ensemble’s name pays homage to the writer, composer, and critic E.T.A. Hoffmann. It is precisely his versatility and his love of music—which he considered the “highest art”—that make him an inspiration to the musicians. In addition to masterpieces for the piano trio, they take a special interest in lesser-known, intriguing new discoveries as well as contemporary music.
For example, a work by composer Isabel Mundry was dedicated to the Trio E.T.A., which they premiered at the Elbphilharmonie in March 2025. In 2026, the trio’s second album will be released by NAXOS, featuring works by César Franck, Edvard Grieg, and the Trio in A Major, which was previously attributed to Brahms. Earlier this year, the Trio E.T.A. won the International Music Competition in Vienna and received the Rolf-Hans-Müller Prize, which was awarded to a piano trio for the first time. In 2025, the trio made its debut at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg (Kammermusikfreunde), at the Liederhalle in Stuttgart (RussKlassik), at the SWR Festival in Schwetzingen, and at Wigmore Hall in London. In 2024, the E.T.A. Trio performed at the Rheingau Music Festival and the Oberstdorf Music Summer. Since 2023, it has been part of SWR2’s exclusive three-year program for emerging artists. In 2023, their debut CD was released on GENUIN, co-produced by the German Music Council and Deutschlandfunk Kultur. The ensemble won the German Music Competition in 2021 and was also awarded the Walbusch Prize and the Berenberg Culture Prize Hamburg. Since its founding, the trio’s artistic work has been documented in numerous radio and television productions by NDR, WDR, BR, and ARD Klassik. The musicians have also achieved significant success as soloists: They are prize winners of renowned competitions such as the TONALi Competition, the “Ton und Erklärung” Competition, the Kiefer Hablitzel | Göhner Music Prize, and the Suggia Competition, and have performed as soloists with, among others, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, and the Mariinsky Orchestra in venues such as the Elbphilharmonie, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the Mariinsky Theater. The Trio E.T.A. draws artistic inspiration from Dirk Mommertz, Hyung-ki Joo, Angelika Merkle, and Martin Funda, among others.
