What can we expect and how can we prepare ourselves?

It's getting more uncomfortable: The climate crisis is in full swing and its consequences are already being felt more and more. Extreme weather events such as heavy rain, heatwaves and flooding are becoming more frequent and are presenting us with new challenges. How are the climate crisis and extreme weather affecting our everyday lives, now and in the future? What will change for our lives in Heidelberg? Who is particularly at risk in terms of health? What precautions can the city and we as individuals take to protect ourselves?

To answer these and other questions, the DAI and the Heidelberg Energy Cooperative invite you to a lecture evening. In short keynote speeches, four competent experts will provide information from different perspectives on the development and management of extreme weather events.

Dr. Max Jungmann is Managing Director of the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE).

The climate reality leader and strategy consultant studied political science, sociology and media and communication science and completed his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg on the health policy challenges of climate change. He founded Momentum Novum and FALK Momentum, teaches at the University of Heidelberg and the Steinbeis Business Academy (SBA) and trains attachés at the Federal Foreign Office.

On urban adaptation measures :

Sabine Lachenicht is Head of the Environmental Office of the City of Heidelberg. After studying political science, biology and philosophy, she initially worked at the ifeu Institute and the Öko-Institut. Since 2025, she has been Head of the Environmental Office, with responsibility for climate protection, climate change adaptation and nature conservation/biodiversity, among other things.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Matzarakis is a bio- and environmental meteorologist at the University of Freiburg. For many years, he was head of the Center for Medical Meteorological Research (ZMMF) of the German Weather Service in Freiburg, Chairman of the Commission for Climate, Tourism and Recreation of the International Society for Biometeorology and Chairman of the Society for the Promotion of Medical Meteorological Research in Germany.

On building and living in flood risk and heat :

Judith Ottich is an architect, clay construction specialist, building turnaround consultant and climate activist involved with Architects for Future. Architects for Future Deutschland e.V. (A4F) stands in solidarity with the climate movement for sustainable change in the construction industry in order to meet the Paris climate targets.

Following the presentations, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and voice your personal concerns in a moderated panel discussion. The aim of the evening is to provide well-founded answers and helpful suggestions - and to prepare us together for the challenges we face as a result of the climate crisis.
