Film & Kunst: "The Mies van der Rohes – A Female Family Saga"

The "Film & Art" series by Cinema Quadrat and Kunsthalle Mannheim is showing a film about the women surrounding star architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe:

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is considered one of the most important protagonists of modern architecture in the 20th century and became famous during his lifetime for his innovative steel structures and large-scale glazing. However, the film does not trace the life of this architectural star, but focuses on his wife Ada, his three daughters Georgia, Marianne and Waltraut and his partner Lilly Reich. They all stay behind in Germany and Europe in 1938, when Mies' politically unconformist husband, father and superior leaves for the USA to escape the increasing repression by the National Socialists. In the film, Katharina Thalbach plays the daughter Georgia van der Rohe, who made a name for herself as a dancer and actress. She tells of a family life in which everything revolved around her father, who was in the public eye. The director, Sabine Gisiger, creates the film with the help of fictitious interviews based exclusively on authentic statements, supplemented by private, unpublished film clips, pictures and documents.
