Little Olive Hoover is thrilled. She’s just found out she has a chance to become “Little Miss Sunshine”! Olive’s family decides to support the slightly chubby girl with a full entourage at the pageant. Shortly thereafter, the quirky troupe is already on its way to the competition venue in New Mexico. Riding in the old, yellow VW bus are: the overly optimistic father Richard, the obscene grandpa, the overwhelmed mother Sheryl, her suicidal brother Frank, the Nietzsche-reading, silent teenage son Dwayne, and, of course, the cheerful Olive. A chaotic journey lies ahead for them all—one that will present some challenges but also bring them closer together.
