Filmscreening & Panel Talk BLACK FACES IN WHITE? SPACE

In the organizer's words:

BLACK FACES IN WHITE? SPACE

D: Thabo Thindi; Germany 2021; OmeU; 80 min.

BLACK FACES IN WHITE? SPACE explores the dynamics and complexity of being black in Germany. It combines the filmmaker's personal experiences as a Black man and the everyday realities of "other" Black people maneuvering through life in a country that sees itself as homogeneously white. Viewers are confronted with everyday conflicts. Questions of colorism, sexuality, identity, pride, nationality and colonialism take up a central part of the plot. The filmmaker attempts to open up new perspectives on being black.

In the presence of director Thabo Thindi, followed by a panel discussion with representatives of the Black communities.

Moderation: Gina Hitsch

Thabo Thindi

My life began in the township of Huhudi in the North West Province of South Africa, where I was born. As a child I had many puzzling questions about why the whites treated us, the blacks, with such deep hostility, accompanied by brutal violence, and yet we were seen as dangerous devils and they as saints. I currently live in Berlin, the city that could roughly be said to have re-institutionalized the continuation of this oppression and exploitation of Black people during and through the so-called Berlin Congo Conference of 1884.
At the moment, my life's occupation, which some might call work, is focused on healing, empowering and connecting the Black masses, using the few tools at my disposal - photography, film, words and my body - to continue the struggle to liberate them from the yoke of the white man. Personally, I prefer not to be put into any kind of categorization, but to be seen simply as a human being witnessing life.
