About the exhibition
The exhibition focuses on various aspects of Thomas Hoepker's photographic work and at the same time pays tribute to his adopted home, the USA, in particular New York. Large-format color photographs show New York in the 1980s. A selection of photographs from Hoepker's first legendary road trip in 1963, which took him across the USA for a photo reportage for the magazine "Kristall", reveals the extraordinary talent of the then young and aspiring photographer.
During his journey, Hoepker discovered his motifs and created images that still move us today: precisely observed everyday situations of people, whether on the street, in casinos and bars or in backyards and poor neighborhoods. This intense and precise view of a country characterized by racial discrimination, mass consumption and spirituality marks the beginning of Thomas Hoepker's career as a photojournalist. The exhibition is complemented by other well-known, iconic highlights, including previously unpublished photographs.
The exhibition is organized by the Stiftung Bayerisches Amerikahaus gGmbH (=Amerikahaus Munich) in cooperation with Buchkunst Berlin. With the kind support of the Amerikahaus Verein e.V. and Steidl Verlag, sponsored by the Federal Foreign Office.
