Lecture by Florian & Lisa Marie Smit

Florian and Lisa Smit have been traveling to Scandinavia for years, where they photograph millennia-old glaciers, mystical forests, vast fjell landscapes and dancing northern lights. But above all, it is the wild animals that make their hearts beat faster: Musk oxen, reindeer and Arctic foxes become real works of art when they appear in front of her lens in the summer evening light or in winter at -15°C.

"Why am I doing this to myself? Is it worth the effort? Do I just want to prove something to myself?" - All these thoughts are running through Florian's head as he lies in his sleeping bag at -35 degrees. It is completely dark outside and the icy cold wind whips around the tent. He is traveling all alone, this time without Lisa, in the lonely expanses of the Sarek National Park. Four agonizingly long weeks, four weeks in the cold - always focusing on the perfect picture!

Autumn 2014 - Florian and Lisa lie on the ground for hours in the middle of a huge quarry until something finally moves. A young Arctic fox scurries across the landscape, sniffing around and barely seeming to notice them. Now every second counts, just don't make any hasty movements or noises. They watch the scene almost motionlessly. The fox lies down, closes its eyes and falls asleep just a few meters in front of them. The camera clicks. When the two of them return to their VW bus, a feeling of happiness flows through them. They had been hoping for this moment for days; all the exertions of the last few weeks have paid off.

It is precisely experiences like this that characterize their exploration of the largest national parks in Norway and Sweden. Florian and Lisa have an eye for natural wonders large and small, be it the view from their sleeping bags up to the starry sky, the play of colors in the weathered rock or butterflies and moths dancing in the mist. They take their time and look for what lies hidden. To do this, they live in a VW bus, in a tent and even in a small wooden hut in the middle of a hilly landscape overgrown with gnarled trees.
