S.O.S. Space of Silence

In the organizer's words:

SOS: SPACE OF SILENCE

Sound and dance performance by Ian Jakab and Mayo Rodríguez

The project S.O.S. Space of Silence is led by the creative duo Ian Jakab (Germany/Chile) and Mayo Rodríguez Baeza (Chile) and aims to reflect and explore the meaning of silence in public spaces. A connection between sound/dance artists and a public space, the project explores how our inner and outer worlds can come into contact through experiments with silence, sound, dance and movement. With a focus on improvisation, the artists strive to create a space for encounters where our interaction with a shared place is reinvented and reimagined, while also seeking silence within ourselves and in the environment around us.

The project comprises four dance-sound experiences that deepen the relationship between people, environment, sound and movement in Chile and Germany in 2024. Using a portable, mountable and non-invasive sound platform, two experiences were shared in May in two completely different locations in Santiago, Chile: An abandoned monument "Mujeres en la memoria" (Women in Memory), erected in 2006 to honor the female victims of political repression in Chile, and a busy intersection in downtown Santiago. In Munich in July, the artists will share two experiences with the 'DJ-BIKE', a solar-powered sound system: The first will take place in the public space of Munich (exact location to be announced). The second experience will take place in front of and in the Pathos Teathers courtyard as part of the "FREUNDSCHAFT IM HOF" festival and will coincide with the "KREATIVLABOR OPEN" festival in the Kreativquartier.

S.O.S. Space of Silence is an attempt to reinvent and redesign our interaction with a shared space. An invitation to experience silence not just as a moment without sound, but rather as a meaningful moment of reflection and reconnection.

Silence as text, silence as movement, silence between the noise, silence as rhythm...
