Sound performance with Marina Cyrino @marina_cyrino

Saturday, August 8, 5–6 p.m.
Bärenzwinger Berlin

Join us for “Fuça,” a sound performance by Brazilian flutist, sound artist, and researcher Marina Cyrino, accompanying the artist talk.

Based in Berlin, she works across improvisation, composition, DIY instruments, and performative installations. She holds a PhD in Music Performance and Interpretation from the University of Gothenburg and is a member of the Brazilian experimental music label Seminal Records and of the Berlin-based collective Time Emotion Studies e.V.

Her flute playing is shaped by techniques developed through the use of a hyper-amplification system, combined with a wide variety of DIY modifications, objects, toys, and balloons attached to the instrument.

Sometimes fabrication, sometimes deconstruction, sometimes fabulation, these techniques emerge from a quest to radically reimagine how a flute might sound, reclaiming an intimate sonic imagination and an embodied materiality that challenges the masculine constraints of a heteropatriarchal tradition in both flute playing and flute construction.

Among her current projects are the duo ICNISP (with Matthias Koole), the Uruplanktara Trio (with Ute Wassermann and Merche Blasco), the Environmental Studies Group (with Tony Buck, Takako Suzuki, and Emilio Gordoa), and HIC UP (a quartet with Matthias Koole, JD Zazie, and Tony Elieh), among others.

Free admission.
