Tanaka Ryōhei's (1933-2019) etchings in black and white and with partly delicate and partly more vibrant colors show a rural Japan with traditional farmhouses and temples as well as nature scenes. Tanaka's prints capture the fragile beauty of Japan's traditional rural architecture. But they also show the decay of a bygone world. The graphic artist found his motifs and inspiration in the still little modernized rural areas around Kyōto. He transformed the sketches he made there into templates for his meticulously crafted prints in his studio. In these, the different textures of the architectural components made of reed, wood and clay become almost tangible.
