True crime in the 18th century:

A supposed sage, sorcerer and secret scholar holds the rich and beautiful of France spellbound with his occult teachings. Two impoverished aristocrats want to take advantage of the gullibility of others to attempt the heist of the century. And in the middle of it all is a beautiful young comtesse, who all those involved want to use as a pawn for their own purposes.

The so-called "collar affair" at the end of the 18th century was the great scandal of its time. Queen Marie Antoinette was involved in the affair and Goethe also followed the case closely. Apparently inspired by it, he wrote the "Grand Cophta" in 1791. A drama about charlatanry, privilege and gender that is as relevant today as it was over 200 years ago.
