Gus Englehorn is not a classic songwriter, but a figure who reinvents himself with every record. Born from a biography that could just as easily have come from a storybook, his path began as a professional snowboarder before music finally took hold of him. His songs tell of escape and arrival, of fantasy as a survival strategy and of the search for a home that is less a place than a state.
His debut album Death & Transfiguration was released in January 2020, right at the beginning of a time of global retreat. With tracks like My Own Paradise, Englehorn hit a nerve without trying to. This was followed by Dungeon Master, an album that combined DIY aesthetics with sprawling storytelling and revealed his love of fantasy, role-playing games and quirky characters.
With The Hornbook, he finally managed a kind of time travel through the history of rock'n'roll. Allusions to fifties oldies, sixties garage rock, seventies glam, eighties indie and nineties lo-fi merged into something unique, strange and future-oriented. The album was mixed by Paul Leary, which marked the beginning of a creative collaboration.
This collaboration continues with The Broken Balladeer. The album was recorded in Austin in March 2025, mostly live and completed within a few days. Produced by Paul Leary and enhanced by the experience of Stuart Sullivan, Howie Weinberg and Kramer, The Broken Balladeer sounds cohesive, direct and surprisingly timeless.
In terms of content, the album revolves around movement and stagnation, homelessness and connectedness, figures drifting through cities, memories and inner landscapes. The Broken Balladeer is less a character than a new vessel in which Gus Englehorn currently resides. His songs seem like brief encounters with something familiar that you still can't quite grasp.
Gus Englehorn's music thrives on this tension. It is playful and serious at the same time, raw and poetic, sometimes like a warning call, sometimes like a place to rest. The Broken Balladeer is the result of a long journey and at the same time a new beginning. An album that doesn't want to impress, but seeks connection and unfolds its power precisely in this.
The fact that you can now experience Gus Englehorn live is more than just a side note. On The Broken Balladeer Tour 2026, he will be joined by Estée Preda on drums when the Canadian makes a stop in Germany on March 28, 2026. Together, they will unfold a live version of his songs that is raw and direct and makes the character of his music particularly clear. The concert will be presented by P.H.M and 674 FM.
