GUTS PIE EARSHOT
In the organizer's words:
Instrumental Cello and Drums Duo: Dancepunk vs. Dubtech, Berlin
GUTS PIE EARSHOT
is undoubtedly one of the most unusual modern bands whose music vaguely draws on punk/hardcore while also incorporating breakbeat/techno.
Theirmusic is purely instrumental. This instrumentation may seem minimalist—consisting only of cello and drums—yet the music conjures up entirely new worlds in the mind’s eye—or ear.
Itcreates a unique atmosphere worlds apart from the structured world of punk, rock, dance music, or drum ’n’ bass. As we know, opposites attract, and in the case of this band, they simply implode. Live drum breakbeats and staccato cello strokes deliver aggressive, tight moments bursting with punk energy, while the classical, oriental cello melodies capture the dance floor’s grooves.
Withtheir sound, they manage to create an entirely new sonic world that oscillates between mourning, melancholy, and dreaminess on the one hand, and power, energy, virtuosity, and the full complexity of jazz punk on the other. The result is innovative and playful pieces that are nonetheless steeped in beauty—and always an irresistible invitation to dance.
GUTS PIE EARSHOTare one of the bands that, for 19 years now, have achieved what only a select few manage: to transport themselves and their audience into a state of intoxication and, for as long as the song lasts, whisk them away to another world.
Influences from hardcore, classic, breakbeat, jazz, techno, and folk create a hypnotic soundtrack to the famous “in-mind movie.”
Yetboth musicians remain true to their punk roots; even the most meticulous passages never come across as sterile, and the sound still retains that somewhat rough charm of a garage band.
It’s clear that here, the depths of established listening habits are explored and put to the test. A band that has broken out of the musical norm to create something completely new—their own unique sound.
