High above Metropolis towers Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel), who controls the city of the future and holds all political and economic power. Below ground, the workers have to toil for him like slaves. But his son Freder (Gustav Fröhlich), of all people, falls in love with worker leader Maria (Brigitte Helm). At the same time, the inventor Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) is working on a steel robot, which he gives the appearance of Maria on Fredersen's instructions. When the robot incites the workers to abandon their machines and flood Metropolis, the city of the future is on the brink of destruction...
