Holy Presence – 10 Celli
In the organizer's words:
The American composer Julius Eastman was a radical proponent of post-minimalism. His fiery body of work would have been almost entirely forgotten following a dramatic descent into poverty and his early death. 10 Celli, led by Jakob Nierenz, now place Eastman’s monumental work “The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc” at the center of their concert, alongside works by Kaija Saariaho, Claudio Monteverdi, Florence Price, and texts by Bertolt Brecht from his “Saint Joan of the Stockyards.” As a Black, gay artist, Eastman boldly addressed the theme of oppression, which he himself experienced. In his genre-defying work, his Joan d’Arc becomes an icon of self-liberation.
