"If you go to India and to Central Africa, you will hear Trovatore." Nine years after its triumphant premiere, Verdi's opera had achieved worldwide popularity, prompting the composer to make this remark. The subject matter could hardly be darker: a gypsy woman who wants to avenge her mother's death at the stake; a count who wants to strike his rival to the core by executing this gypsy woman; a gruesome truth that is revealed at the moment of death. All the ingredients of Verdi's scenic richness come to the fore: eerie soundscapes, harsh contrasts, vocal brilliance, opulent tableaux. The coherent narrative gives way to the variation of suggestive musical images with which Verdi served "the most important part of the drama": revenge.
