On his third album as bandleader,*Roots and Things*, bassist and composer Jakob Dreyer presents a new sound, a new band, and an irrepressible love of swing. The versatile bassist Jakob Dreyer, born in Germany and based in New York, had already proven himself to be an extremely prolific composer on two earlier albums in his *Songs, Hymns and Ballads* series, but on*Roots and Things*he takes it up a notch.

With an impressive lineup featuring vibraphonist Sasha Berliner, renowned tenorsaxophonist Tivon Pennicott, and the in-demand drummer Kenn Salters, Dreyer presents 15 lively and consistently swinging original compositions, as well as a well-chosen cover, on his third recording for the Barcelona-based label Fresh Sound New Talent. With its focus on powerful grooves and contemplative ballads, interspersed with brief interludes that serve as a kind of respite for the listener, *Roots and Things* is a profound statement by the bassist and composer, who has become a ubiquitous figure in the city’s jazz scene since moving to New York in 2014.
